Outside of searching on Itch.io, it can be hard to find new homebrew games to play. While GB Grotto is working on our Upcoming Releases page there is a lack of centralized information on this topic. That’s where GB Studio Vault comes in!

GB Studio Vault is a platform for creators to submit their released and upcoming games for public display. It focuses on original homebrew games, fan games, and demakes such as the recently released Pokemon Scarlet Demake. While GB Studio isn’t the only way to create new Game Boy games this site does focus on putting a spotlight on games created using the GB Studio engine. I was lucky enough to have a quick Q&A with GB Studio Vault’s creator, Robyn, who has just released the beta version of the site!

When did you first come across the GB Studio / Game Boy homebrew scene?

I came across GB Studio about 2 years ago. I’ve always been interested in homebrew stuff and love weird and obscure demakes. I found out the GB Studio engine is a great way to do that!

When did you first start working on GB Studio Vault? What sparked the idea?

I’m not 100% sure, but I think I started working on it about 2 months ago, maybe longer. Honestly, I was sort of just looking for homebrew Game Boy / Game Boy Color games and really struggled. Itch.io isn’t super reliable in that essence and wasn’t super clear on everything as well as not being sure how to find easy access to GB Studio-only games. So I decided to make my own way to do that!

What is GB Studio Vault going to offer people?

Any game made with GB Studio that meets the requirements I’m happy to feature! The only thing I don’t showcase but will still happily put in the coming soon section is really early demons. You may notice in the beta that some demos are up for showcase and some that are not. It’s kind of hard to pick what goes where, but the reason for that is some I see as long enough to be able to be classed as a game and some early ones are more tech demos, if that makes sense.

What is the submittal process for games? What are the requirements?

I am planning on adding a section to the website where creators can submit! For now, it’s done through either the contact page on the site or directly through Discord @Mothlematic.

The requirements aren’t super intense. I try to make it accessible to mainly anyone. The only requirements really are that it is made in GB Studio, it isn’t a super rushed or low-effort project, and no excessive nudity or gore.

Anything else you’d like to add?

All I can say is it’s in beta right now and it’s only the core of what’s coming. There is A LOT more on the way, like a lot, the beta is simply just the base of what’s going on!
